Fujifilm Announces the New X-H1 Camera. Here's My Take.

Published: Tue, 02/20/18

Hi ,

Last Thursday, Fuijfilm announced the new X-H1, which is the first X Series camera to features in-body image stabilization, commonly referred to as IBIS.This can be combined with the OIS stabilization found on some of the Fujifilm lenses for even greater stability when shooting in a wide variety of situations.

The other big thing about the X-H1 is that it has greatly enhanced video capabilities. In fact, the X-H1 was specifically designed to function as a high-end video professional camera and compete in that market.

With its larger heat sink, the X-H1 can shoot 4K video at up to 200Mbps (twice as high a bit rate as the X-T2) at a duration of 1.5x longer than the X-T2; 15 minutes per battery. Add the new X-H1 Vertical Booster Grip and you can triple that time, and it has even more impressive slow-mo video function.

It also has a brand new film simulation. ETERNA was Fujifilm’s professional motion picture film stock and it has been reproduced inside the X-H1. With cinematic color rendition, lower saturation and a very high dynamic range, ETERNA is designed to give you that “classic movie look” right out of the box, and it lends itself extremely well to color grading.

With a more robust magnesium alloy chassis that's 25% thicker than the body on the X-T2, and the higher resolution EVF and updated autofocus algorithms, the X-H1 is Fujifilm's highest performing camera to date.

In many ways, it checks off even more boxes for those those people who continue to find reasons NOT to buy a Fuji, and for existing Fuji users, it offers you the highest level of performance and durability.

I wrote a blog post this morning that outlines all the main features of the X-H1 and I also give my personal analysis about the camera and the new technology. If you're curious about the X-H1, be sure to check out my post, and if you have specific questions, feel free to ask.

However, I may be a little slow on my email during the next couple weeks, as I'm heading back to Scotland this Thursday for my 50th birthday trip. We're heading out to Islay, which has wonderful, remote, rugged coastlines and beaches, and it's where the really smoky, peaty whisky comes from.

I'll be taking my X-T2 and looking forward to getting lost in the wonderful beauty of Scotland. It will also mean that I will have visited Scotland during all four seasons in the past year.

I hope you enjoy the rest of February and I'll be back with you again in early March.
