Trying to photograph moving subjects is one of the hardest things to do with your camera. Making sure you nail them with sharp focus is even harder. 

In this email. I'm going to give you a fundamental tip that can help make it easier to nail focus on those fast-moving, hard-to-get scenes, whether you're shooting action, sports, people, kids, pets, animals birds, or whatever.

Shooting Wide Angle is WAY Easier than Telephoto

Telephoto action shots can be really cool. There's no question about it. Capturing your subject with a long lens against a soft, blurry background is an awesome look, but it can be extremely difficult to nail this kind of image. 

Aside from the challenge of trying to keep you subject in the frame, especially the farther out you zoom. You also have to make sure your selected AF zone stays locked as it moves through your viewfinder. Plus, you have so little room for error, because long lenses have a very shallow depth of field. In other words, it's easy to mess up.

Wide angle lenses have a much greater DOF, that actually increases, the further away the subject is form the camera. That said, the most dramatic images with wide angle lenses are often when the subject is very close. Even in those situations, though, the vastly increased DOF allows makes it much easier to assure that your subject is in focus, like in the examples below.

And here's another important tip: Trying to nail focus on a fast moving subject is SOOOOO much easier when shooting side-to-side motion, as opposed to front to back motion, like when a subject is racing directly towards or away from you. These kinds of situations are so challenging. 

So, if you're having trouble nailing a particular scene in sharp focus, one of the best ways to give yourself a leg up is to shoot wide angle on a side-to-side subject. 

Not that you CAN'T get those front-to-back long lens telephoto action shots, it just takes a LOT more practice, patience and really good technique.
