Hi ,
Yesterday morning at 8:29AM, we were jarred awake by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Anchorage.
Since the epicenter was very close, less than 10 miles away from my house, the ferocity of this earthquake was considerable, and severe enough to cause major infrastructure damage to local roads and bridges. You've probably seen a few of these pictures on the national news.
The event was quite scary, by far the biggest and most frightening earthquake I've ever experienced. The entire house rumbled and shook as if a freight train was running right through the living room. Being early morning on the last day of November, it was still dark outside, and the power went out almost immediately.
Fortunately, we sustained no apparent damage to the house, to ourselves or to our belongings. Most of our furniture walked a few inches away from the walls, and we had a few things fall from shelves and cupboards, surprisingly, nothing broke. Not all of our friends or neighbors were quite so lucky, although nobody was injured.
Throughout the day, I received lots of messages from friends, colleagues and readers asking if we were ok. I very much appreciated the effort, and so with that in mind, I though I would give everyone an official notice that we are safe, sound and intact.
By yesterday evening, we were getting pretty rattled by the continued aftershocks. We had a handful of M5 aftershocks last night, but as of this morning, they seem to have abated in intensity. So, I think we're through the worst of it.
