You and I are Trichromats. That means we're able to clearly see all three primary colors in the visible light spectrum. Not all mammals have this ability.
With this in mind, color recognition is perhaps the most fundamental aspect of our advanced human visual systems, and it's one of the most important elements used in our creativity.
In fact, 30% of the neurons in our cerebral cortex are devoted to visual processing, and 80% of that information is directly related to color recognition.
When you combine this with our rich history of cultural traditions, you can see why color plays such an important role in nearly every aspect of our lives.
