Exploring the World of Outdoor Photography with Tips, News, Imagery and Insight | Dan Bailey's Adventure Photography Blog | ||||||||||||||||||||
Hi , Here we are, just two days away from the end of 2011. I’m actually a little sad to see it go. It feels a bit like a traveling companion you know you’ll probably never see again when the trip’s over. Pardon me while I get a bit emotional. For me, 2011 meant yet another great leap forward with my photography, and I’m excited about how much I learned, how much I wrote, how much I taught, how much I inspired people, and much I was in turn, inspired by other photographers. And, of course, I’m excited that the quality and scope of my imagery keeps improving, even after 21+ years with the camera. 2011 will always rank as a banner year for me, but as great as it was, I am even more excited about 2012, and you should be too. Why? Digital imaging technology has exploded. No matter what kind of gear or apps you use in your photography, no matter it’s based around a DSLR or an iPhone, and no matter if you do it for money or fun (or both), photography is now, and the supremely cool thing is that it’s whatever want it to be. Instagram. Photoshop. Lightroom. iPhone 4S. Nikon. Canon. Sony. Borrowlenses.com. iPad 2. Twitter. Facebook. Tumblr. Flickr. Photoshelter. Smugmug. Photoflex. Lumiquest. PocketWizard. Wordpress. Lowepro. B&H Photo. Google+. Manfrotto. Gitzo. Time lapse. Motion control. Micro four thirds. Photobooks. Sharing. What can, and more importantly, what will you do with any and all of this stuff in 2012? The possibilities are endless. See, you’re excited now. You can’t wait for the new year to begin! As much as you’ll probably launch yourself into 2012 with total and reckless abandon, just like I will, here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you take yourself into the next few months. 1. Spend some time away from the camera AND the computer.Time away is time to think, and that’s when you’ll come up with ideas, creative concepts and action plans for what you want to do with your photography this year. Remember, Creative Ideas Don’t Live At Your Desk. Away can be on a walk, on a bike, in the yard with a shovel or a few minutes in your favorite chair with a notebook. Take the time. Your creativity will benefit. 2. Upgrade something. You don’t have to go crazy on gear. You certainly have my encouragement if you do decide to go that way, but even if you just upgrade one or two pieces of photo gear of software, you’ll keep yourself on the front end of things. Or don't spend any money and instead upgrade you workflow or photo filing system. Upgrade something. Kick off the new year with something new or different. With holiday sales still in full swing, there’s still time to get in on some pretty good deals. Right now, B&H Photo has lots of specials on lenses, DLSRs, point and shoots, Canon speedlites, and free shipping on all kinds of items. They also have a special deal on Photoshop CS5- $150 off the full version until January 3. Check dates, because some of these deals are good until Dec. 31, while others go into the second week of January. Also, if you’re an emerging pro, or pro who wants to add efficiency to your business, you might want to check out Cradoc FotoQuote 6, or FotoBiz. They’re both great programs, (I’ve used PhotoQuote for years) and both programs are 30% off until January 5. Either would be a good investment in your photography business. Coming in 2012As if I haven’t said it enough times, I’m super excited for 2012. I’ve got some longer online tutorials launching in the first quarter, and I’ve got an office full of gear to try out right now. Look for more reviews in the coming weeks. That’s just a start. Stay tuned to the blog and to my Facebook Page, and of course to this newsletter to hear about those things first. As much information and content that I’ve shared with you up to this point, it’s about to get cooler and more in depth. Also, I’d like your input. Let me know what you’d like to see on the blog in the coming year. Tell me what topics you really enjoy, what you don’t particularly like, and what you’d like to see more of. The blog is for you, so help me make it exactly what you want it to be. Enjoy last weeks’ posts (especially my Lowepro pack review and awesome video- I promise, you don’t want to miss it!!), enjoy the last days of 2011, and get ready for an awesome year. I wish you the best for your creativity and your photography in 2012. With that in mind, I’ll leave you with this post that I found this morning- The Habits of Creative People. Good reading. Take care and Happy New Year! Dan
