Exploring the World of Outdoor Photography with Tips, News, Imagery and Insight Dan Bailey's Adventure Photography Blog
Hi ,

This weekend is the summer solstice, which means that you have more daylight hours to do photography than any other weekend of the year! And although I hope that you’ll pop inside just long enough to read this issue of my newsletter, I'm sure that you’re out exploring and adventuring whenever you can, or perhaps planning a big trip somewhere.

My 20 Tips eBook

If you're needing some extra creative inspiration this month, why not check out my Creative Photography Techniques eBook? It’s a Kindle eBook, but you can read it on any device with the Amazon Kindle app for computers, tablets and phones. Creative Photography Techniques − 20 Tips for Stronger Images is exactly that: 20 concise tips with image examples that can help jump start your own creativity. It might teach you some new techniques, or at least help you look at them in a new way.

I’ll admit, you might already know some or all of this stuff, but reading the tips again might make a difference for you. If you already have the book, then be sure and tell your other photographer friends about it!

On Being a Photographer

What does it take to become a great photographer? I’ll give you a hint- it takes the same hard work and dedication as it takes to do just about anything else. There’s no magic formula, potion, spell, or trickery that will make you successful, whether you find that success in the form of money or just awesome imagery, just lots of focus, learning and a bit of obsession over a number of years. Here are two great articles that talk about this dedication and obsession. Read How to Become a Nat Geo Photographer, and First Be A Photographer. They’re both good, quick pieces.

Great Photography Marketing Books

Of course, dedication alone isn’t automatically going to give you all the knowledge you need in order to enter the industry and make the right business decision. If you are a working photographer, or if you aspire to make money with your camera, then check out this list of 5 Great Photography Marketing Books. All of these titles on the list are filled with relevant info that will help set you on the right track for success and I’d recommend any one of them.

My Recommended Gear Page at B&H Photo

Although I would usually recommend shopping locally in your own community, I know that it’s not always possible to find the best photo and video gear in your own home town. If you do buy stuff online, consider checking out my Recommended Gear page at B&H Photo. It’s a customized list that I made of some essential photography items, and it’s not brand specific.

Even if you don’t get any of the exact items on the page, clicking through and buying gear through that page helps me out. If you like these newsletters and the stuff that I write on my blog each week, this is one way that can show your appreciation for my efforts. At any rate, If you need to stock up on cards, batteries, accessories or purchase some new camera or computer gear for an upcoming trip, then consider getting them here and book marking the link for the future. Thanks! :)

Adobe Lightroom 5 Book

Adobe has just released Lightroom 5, (a $79 upgrade from LR4), and it’s packed with a host of new features, some of which are pretty groundbreaking. There’s the Advanced Healing Brush, the Upright Tool, new video, book and slideshow creation tools, Smart Previews, Full Screen Previews and much more.

To help orient photographers to all the new changes and advancements, Piet Van den Eynde has written an eBook called Lightroom 5 Up to Speed. Piet is an Adobe Certified Expert and he shows you how to get started using the new tools in a 77 page manual and over 50 minutes of companion videos. Price for all of this? Only five bucks. Get it here and get up to speed. If you don’t have Lightroom 5 yet, this is a comprehensive way to see what’s in store for you when you do upgrade.

Thanks for reading, enjoy the posts and don’t forget to share!!

Happy Solstice,
Dan

The Joys of Photographing in Morning Light

DSCF4173Early morning photography is always a pleasure. After all, there’s something to be said for being right there out in the open when the dawn breaks and reveals your first view of the sun. It makes you feel productive, like you’re not wasting a single second of the day. Another nice thing is that it’s often very quiet and still during the dawn hours, which means that you’re alone with your thoughts, your equipment and your creativity. From a photography standpoint, … Continue reading

Crossing the Alps by Bike – Part 2: Not Enough Days In Austria

S0375052After completing Part 1 of our journey, and pedaling up to Neuschwanstein Castle in the pouring rain, we woke the next morning to a beautiful sunrise in the town of Füssen and a bold view of the Austrian Alps, which lay just to the south. I stepped outside for some morning photography, which actually turned out to be the last dawn of good light until the end of our ride, and captured some nice scenes with the Fuji XE-1. This … Continue reading

Shooting Glacier Landscapes with the Fujifilm XE-1

_DSF9775Yesterday I flew out to the Knik Glacier and shot landscapes with the Fujifilm XE-1 under Alaska evening light. Of course, at 9:00PM, we were still two and a half hours away from sunset, so it wasn’t golden, but it was appealing light nonetheless. Since I finally upgraded to Lightroom v.4.4, which supports Fujifilm’s X-Trans RAW format, I went ahead and shot a few photos in RAW. This was the first time I’ve shot RAW with the Fujifilm cameras, and although … Continue reading

Using The Golden Ratio to Compose Your Photos

LDN-CO-100Where you position your important subject elements determines the overall balance of your composition and it can make the difference between an interesting picture and a boring picture. From that standpoint, subject placement can easily make or break the shot, and so after gauging the light, one of the first things you’ll want to do is figure out how you’ll arrange the elements in your frame. We often hear about the Rule of Thirds, which states that you should put … Continue reading

Crossing the Alps by Bike – Part 3: Downhill to Verona, Italy

_DSF8799-1When we last left off from our journey, we had just climbed the 1,000′ switchback hill into the town of Nauders, Austria, which sits just before the Italian border. If you haven’t read Part 1: Germany and Castles, and Part 2: Not Enough Days in Austria, you can go ahead and catch up on how we got to this point. We woke up in Nauders to puffy cloud banks and low level fog that obscured the surrounding peaks. As we … Continue reading
