Read the Dan Bailey Photo Newsletter - April 2015

Hi ,

The big news is that my book, Outdoor Action and Adventure Photography, hit the streets this week! It was released by Focal Press, a leading publisher of creative media and technology books with a 75 year history of photography, filmmaking, journalism and audio recording titles under their belt.

Since this is my first real book, I feel an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment to see my work in print. The designers did an amazing job with the layout and printing, and the finished product looks and feels very professional.

I put a great deal of time and effort into this book, (nearly 60,000 words worth!) with one sole purpose in mind- to chronicle the extent of my outdoor photography knowledge, and put all of my ideas and methods into one volume. It includes just about every technique I use in my shooting style; these are the skills and techniques that I’ve practiced and developed during the nearly 20 years I’ve worked as a pro photographer, and I know they can help you become a better photographer.

I worked hard to describe my techniques in a universal way so that anyone can walk away with new skills after they read it. Whether you shoot hardcore action or not, there’s a great deal of outdoor photography info in this book for everyone. One reader told me she bought the book to help her shoot better photos of her own kids!

Outdoor Action and Adventure Photography is now in stock at Amazon at a special price, so get your copy now- I know I’m a little biased here, but I think you’ll be really pleased when hold this book in your hands and see what it has to offer your photography. UK readers, you can order your copy at the Amazon UK store.

If you've already ordered the book, then I want to thank you for your purchase. I'd also ask that you please consider leaving a review at Amazon, or let me know if you have any questions. Any feedback or would be greatly appreciated. Also, be sure and tell your other photographer friends about it!

Knik Glacier Photo Workshop

Last month, I led my Knik Glacier Winter Photography Workshop, and I’m happy to report that it was a huge success. I had 5 awesome participants, and we had an absolutely stellar day of ice photography out on the Knik.

We spent part of the day walking around on the frozen glacier lagoon shooting icescapes, ice bergs, ice chunks, cracks in the ice… you name it. Everyone got a full hour of doors-off helicopter time for shooting aerials right over the toe of the massive, 25-mile long Knik Glacier. Even though I fly over this area in my little Cessna, I was blown away by just how amazing it was to shoot from a slow moving and hovering helicopter.

Here’s a photo gallery from our workshop where you can see some of the shots we all took that day. Also, you can read reviews of the workshop and my teaching style on the Alaska Photo Treks TripAdvisor Page.

Although I don’t have dates yet, I plan to run the Knik Glacier workshop again next year, so stay tuned for more details.

Upcoming Workshops

I do have a number of other workshops set for the rest of 2015: I’ll be a guest photography guide on the Mighty St. Lawrence trip being offered through Adventure Canada and Fujifilm, June 14-23, which is 10 days spent exploring the north coast of the Quebec Provence.

My special Denali Backcountry Adventure Photography Trek, which runs July 19-25 is a 7-day backpacking adventure photography workshop. I’ll take you on a journey through the biggest and most rugged mountains in North America. We’ll get dropped off by float plane in the heart of Denali National Park and the Alaska Range, only 17 miles away from the highest and most massive mountain on the continent, (Denali, at 20,320′), and spend 5 days exploring and honing our outdoor photography skills in the most authentic setting possible.

My Denali Wilderness Photography Workshop, which runs August 27-31 is a 3-day, 4-night photography workshop that allows you to immerse yourself in the wonders of Denali National and enhance your photography skills with me as your instructor. This one is based in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve at the exclusive Denali Backcountry Lodge.

Throughout the summer, I’ll be doing a number of Sunset Photo Safaris with Alaska Photo Treks, where we go hunting for the best light of the day at scenic locations around Anchorage and Chugach State Park. These are great opportunities to experiment with awesome scenery and practice outdoor photography on some very enchanting subjects. Our flexible itinerary allows for spontaneous stops to photograph wildlife en route as well. We now offer full online booking, so if your summer plans include a trip to Alaska, consider fitting a Sunset Photo Safari into your itinerary.

Gear Corner

Fuji X-T1 and XF 18-135mm lens on Sale - Save $400

Right now, the Fuji X-T1 kit with the XF 18-135mm weather sealed lens is $400 off. This is an excellent deal, considering how versatile the 18-135mm lens is. It’s considered the swiss army lens of the Fuji X cameras and it’s one of my favorite lenses because it’s so lightweight, and yet it’s still very sharp. I used it to great extent on my recent Knik Glacier Bikepacking Adventure. Check out my full review of the 18-135 lens here.

If you already own an X camera body, you can pick up the lens by itself and save $300. That brings the price down to only $599, which is an incredible deal for this lens.

Canon Lens Price Drops

If you shoot Canon, you’ll want to take note of the current price drops. Right now, you can save up to $800 select Canon lenses. There are a huge number of models available with rebates, so take a look at the list.

Memory Cards

You can never have too  many memory cards, so if you’re stocking up on SD cards for the summer, these are the cards I recommend: Sandisk ExtremePro 95MB/s. They offer a great value for performance and write speed for the price. I use these all the time in my Fuji X-T1, which has a very fast capture rate and large RAW files.

Iridient Developer - An Awesome RAW Processing Program

I’ve been searching for the best solution for processing my RAW files. If you shoot with Fuji gear, you know that Lightroom doesn’t always do the best with the X-Trans RAW files; it kind of smudges fine details, which makes subjects not look as sharp as they could.

In the past, I’ve used Capture One Pro 8, which is an excellent program, but I wanted a simper solution, so now I’ve turned to Iridient Developer. I tried this software last year and was very impressed with its capabilities- so much, in fact, that I’m now going back to it.

What I like about ID, is that it’s very easy to use. As a standalone RAW converter, I can still use Lightroom as my main catalog and easily get photos to and back from ID after I’ve converted them. Also, the image quality and sharpening algorithms are simply stunning.

Iridient Developer was created by a single individual, which I think is also pretty cool. I’m very happy to support his efforts, because he’s done a great job coming up with a very usable and affordable program. ID also works with other camera formats, so if you’re looking for a great quality stand alone RAW converter, or one to supplement your photo cataloging program like Photo Mechanic, Lightroom or even iPhoto, I'd highly recommend this software. You can check out the free demo here.

Around the Web

I dare you to check out this collection of 25 Magnificient Monochrome Images and not be wowed. There are some really amazing shots in here and they offer some neat compositional ideas for shooting when you have a scene with predominantly similar color palette.

I loved playing with Legos when was a kid, and when I grew up, I had a slide scanner. This guy has apparently combined both, using his creative engineering skills to build a fully functioning Lego motorized slide scanner

Another one from the nostalgia department. Here’s a fun blog post about the venerable Kodak Slide Carousel. Who doesn’t have tons of memories about these things? Our constantly advancing technological world has left many great things dying in its wake, and some of these things remember with great fondness. We don’t have a use for them anymore, and yet, we’re still sad to see them go.

I’ve gone full mirrorless during the past year. I haven’t used my DSLRs since last April and I haven’t looked back. I’m convinced that they’re the future of photography. In this blog post, Chris Corradino explores some of the advantages and benefits of using mirrorless cameras, aside from their reduced size and weight.

Have a great week!

Thanks once gain for being a subscriber and for following my work. I hope I've inspired you a little bit in this issue, or at least entertained you for a few minutes.
