Exploring the World of Outdoor Photography with Tips, News, Imagery and Insight | Dan Bailey's Adventure Photography Blog | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hi ,
As I lamented in my recent post, Nikon has discontinued my favorite camera ever, the awesome and supremely impressive D700. However, if all the rumors are correct, Nikon is about to announce the new D600, essentially giving photographers a full frame body at a much more affordable price.
It’s expected to be in the $2,000 range, and in many respects it looks like it will be a capable camera. It won’t have the exact specs as the D700 did, but it will have some definite improvements. For many users who have been wanting a full frame body but couldn’t justify spending $2,700 or more, the D600 could be a very workable option.
Whatever happens, I’ll do a complete analysis on my blog, so stay tuned.
Scratched Sensor![]() A few weeks ago, I experienced a digital photographers’ worst nightmare. I scratched the sensor on my D700. To be clear, it wasn’t actually the sensor, it was the low pass filter that sits in front of the sensor. Don’t ask me how it happened, because I’m not really sure. What I do know, is that it pretty much ruined my day.
However, there’s a fix. A company called LifePixel offers sensor filter replacement on just about every modern DLSR. It’s not cheap, but it’s a whole lot less expensive than buying a new camera or even sending your camera into the manufacture. Filter cost varies by camera model, and unfortunately, the D700 is about the most expensive one. However, ordering and shipping was easy and turnaround was extremely reasonable. Short story, I basically have the equivalent of a brand new D700 and a few hundred dollars less in my bank account. It was a worthy trade, though.
Creative Photography TechniquesIf you haven’t checked out my brand new eBook, head on over to Amazon and pick up a copy of Creative Photography Techniques at the the special introductory price of 99 cents. It’s full of 20 very simple, yet effective tips that will help you compose stronger images. You might already know some of them, but even just reviewing them with different imagery may spark some new creativity on your part.
Even though it’s in Kindle format, you can read it on any device. Amazon has a free Kindle app, which you can install on your iOS or Android phone, tablet or desktop computer. Once you install the app, you simply tell the Amazon store where to deliver your purchase and it will be sent right to your device, or to all of your devices if you wish.
If you’ve already picked up a copy, I’d like to thank you for your purchase. You actually helped it reach the #1 spot in the Kindle store for photography eBooks on the very first day of release. Also, I’d really appreciate it if you could leave some feedback or a review on the Amazon product page. You can even “Like” the page if you found the book useful. Basically, I’m asking for your help to get the book out to as many people as possible, and taking a few minutes to write a review will make a big difference and put a smile on my face.
Cyclocross!!![]() Cyclocross season began here in Anchorage and last Saturday I headed out with a my camera and some light. Check out my collection of photos from the first race. I’m really excited about them, and think that they’re some of the most dynamic biking photos that I’ve ever shot. I like it when that happens. Never stop improving. Every time you shoot, you learn and get better.
Fuji X10 still on saleMy favorite little camera of late, the Fujifilm X10 is still on sale at Amazon- only $549. No word on how long the sale will last. Some people have speculated that the sale means that the X10 will be replaced soon, but trust me. The X10 will be around for the foreseeable future. How do I know this? Stay tuned for details… Besides, it’s still ahead of it’s time and other manufacturers are only beginning to catch up with this awesome little camera.
iPhone 5![]() Finally, if you don’t know by now, Apple just announced the iPhone 5. IPhoneography just got a whole lot better. Maybe it’s time for me to finally put my four year old 3G model to rest and upgrade.
I hope that you’ve been getting out and enjoying the cooler weather and slightly earlier magic hour. Fall is a wonderful time for photography, so be sure and take full advantage of all the opportunities that come your way with this new season.
Enjoy my recent blog posts and be sure and share this newsletter with your other photographers friends!
Take care,
Dan
