Exploring the World of Outdoor Photography with Tips, News, Imagery and Insight Dan Bailey's Adventure Photography Blog
Hi ,

It seem as if the Cyber Deals have gone crazy. Rising from our post turkey daze, we woke after Thanksgiving to find some amazing photography deals. Some have come and gone, but there are a few noteworthy deals that are still going on.

Nikon D7000 and Nikon/Canon Rebates

Right now, the Nikon D7000 is experiencing a $300 price drop. Until December 15, the D7000 is only $896 at B&H Photo and Amazon. (The B&H Photo deal includes a free Lowepro bag and a 16GB Sandisk memory card.) When you bundle it with specific lenses, you can save even more- up to an additional $200. Buy camera plus lens and get $500 off. Not bad. This is in addition to the current Nikon rebates that offer savings of up to $950, and the Canon rebates that offer savings of up to $400. The Nikon rebates are still good for two more weeks, and the Canon deals go through January 5.

The Flash Bus DVD

Last year, Joe McNally and David Hobby put on a 29 city lighting workshop tour called The Flash Bus, which ended up being an incredible learning opportunity for anyone who caught these two off camera flash masters in full teaching and speedlighting action. I saw the workshop in Denver and found it to be one of the most inspiring and educational classes that I’ve ever attended. I feel that my post-Flash Bus work is definitely better, and in fact would even go so far as to say that TFB jump started my own flash photography by leaps and bounds.

Right now, the Flash Bus DVD is only $49. That’s half off from its normal price of $100. If you missed The Flash  Bus, or even if you want to relive the moment and take some more time to digest everything you saw during the seminar, I’d recommend picking up a copy. It’s a two disc set that covers the entire full day workshop. One disk is Strobist David Hobby and the other is Speedlight king Joe McNally. Two legends. Half price. Nice!

Manfrotto 190 More Tripod

The Manfrotto 190XProB is one of the best all around tripods out there and a great compromise between weight, stability and price. The Manfrotto 190 More is basically the 190XPROB with special sauce. It’s pretty much the same design, but extends to 64” and holds 11lbs of gear. Also, the flip locks are most adjustable, and overall it’s finished with some very nice detailing. It usually costs $189. But right now, it’s only $139. Add the $25 mail in rebate and the Manfrotto 190 More will only end up costing $114. You simply can not beat that price for a high quality tripod. Check it out.

Ambitious new eBooks

There’s no question that photography ebooks are evolving. This month we see two brand new ambitious titles, one by Craft and Vision and the other by landscape photographer extraordinaire Ian Plant.

Lightroom 4 Unmasked by Piet Van den Eynde

Craft and Vision’s latest title, Lightroom 4 Unmasked is a huge, authoritative instructional manual that shows you how to get the most out of Lightroom. With 312 spreads and 60 case studies, Adobe Certified Expert and author Piet Van den Eynde covers everything you need to know with in-depth lessons, tutorials, examples, content and features that help you fully understand how to use Lightroom thoroughly and efficiently.

Not just a book of tips, this is a big book full of searchable content, hyperlinks and tons of information, this is the Lightroom text book that you’ve always wanted, easily on par with some of the other print titles that are out there at the bookstores. New to lightroom? Just upgraded? Haven’t quite got the hang of everything that it can do? Check out Lightroom 4 Umasked.

Visual Flow: Mastering The Art of Composition, by Ian Plant

Landscape photographer extraordinaire Ian Plant has just released a brand new eBook called Visual Flow, Mastering The Art of Composition, which he wrote with George Stocking. At 287 pages this is an amazing and ambitious undertaking. Yes, heard right, two hundred eighty seven pages. In talking with Ian yesterday about the size and scope of the book, he commented that it’s the only book that he released all year.

I’ve been a fan of Ian’s work for years. He creates stunning imagery and he does an awesome job teaching and explaining the creative aspects of photography and composition. This book explains the fundamentals of composition in incredible depth. With six main chapters, as well as an extended introduction, tons of classical and real world information and examples to illustrate, Visual Flow is a comprehensive manual that I’d highly recommend to any photographer. Definitley worth a look. I’ve got a more thorough review on my blog that you can read as well.

Biking The California Coast with the X10

My love for the X10 continues. I recently spent a week in California bike touring on Highway 1 and mountain biking with friends, and the only camera I took was the X10. Little cameras can be way more accessible and portable, and with the quality that we see from the latest generation, you can capture high resolution imagery that’s good enough for anything that you’ll probably want to do with it. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the trip. More on the blog.

I hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving and are looking forward to a season of winter photography. I know I am, but that’s partly because I don’t have any choice. Up here in Anchorage, winter has already arrived. If I didn’t like it, I’d have an awful long time to kill waiting for spring.

Thank for reading and be sure to share this with your friends!
Dan
