Exploring the World of Outdoor Photography with Tips, News, Imagery and Insight Dan Bailey's Adventure Photography Blog

Hi ,

I’ve got a handful of very exciting things to share with you this week. First of all, I put out the inaugural issue of my new Dan Bailey Photo Quarterly Journal. The Winter 13 issue features some updated tearsheets, news and info, highlights of my recent Alaska cyclocross photography project as well as some brand new imagery. Essentially, it’s a concise collection that illustrates what I’ve been doing for the past few months and what I’ve got planned for the coming weeks and months. Check out the Winter 13 Issue and let me know what you think!

Outdoor Action Photography Workshop: February 23-24, Anchorage, Alaska

Coming up at the end of February, I’m doing an outdoor action photography workshop through the REI Anchorage. We’ll spend Saturday outside photographing the Fur Rondy World Championship sprint races and other winter subjects. I’ll give you personal instruction and guidance and shares my insight, methods and techniques with each student during the session. Then, on Sunday afternoon, you'll be able to show off your best images and receive helpful tips on how to improve your work.

Winter is a great time for outdoor photography, so consider joining us for this great, personal workshsop. And, if you’ve never tried shooting dog sledding, you’re in for a real treat!

Brand New: The B&H Photo Dan Bailey Landing Page

I’ve bought an awful lot of photography gear over the past two decades, and believe me, during that time, I’ve experienced the best and the worst when it comes to camera and photo retailers. After having a few miserable shopping nightmares in the early 90s, one of which involved making a special trip down to NY to personally return an entire brick of gray market Kodachrome that was sold and shipped to me as USA branded film. Let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. A few years later, I bought a Nikon F5 from some other store and ended up returning two before I got one that worked. Again, not my favorite thing to do.

I started buying from B&H Photo shortly after that, partly because they have the lowest prices, but also because if I ever had a problem, they took care of me. As a working pro, I’m pretty simple when it comes to buying gear. I usually need it fast and I need to get it from a company I can trust.

As you may know, I’m a B&H affiliate, which means that if you click through the B&H links and banners on my site and buy anything within 72 hours, I get a small commission for the referral. It’s not much, but over time it adds up and helps compensate me a little bit for the time I spend writing my camera and gear reviews and other blog posts. Yes, it’s nice to get a few bucks here and there, but that’s not really why I do it. My primary goal is to help you have the best buying experience you can, because I know how much it can suck when you don’t.

With this in mind, I’ve been working with B&H pretty closely for the past couple of years in order to notify you of the best camera and photography deals, because after all, why are your needs any different than mine? Now, my partnership with B&H has expanded in a very special way. They’ve given me my own landing page.

That’s right. Click http://www.bhphotovideo.com/DanBailey and you’ll be taken to my page of recommended gear. It’s all stuff that I personally use or think is worth using, or it’s the non-Nikon brand equivalent to specific pieces of gear that I use. It’s also an easy URL to remember and bookmark. In the future, you can enter my store and give me a referral. Think of it as a very special like button. One thing to note, the URL is case sensitive, so the D and B need to be capitalized.

As I’ve said before, I would always recommend buying from a local specialty dealer if possible. However, the reality is that many towns don’t have a good camera store anymore, so the next time you’re ready to order some gear, consider clicking through my landing page and shopping B&H Photo.

Special Offer from Kelby Training

If you’ve ever taken a photography workshop from a top working professional, then you know what a valuable investment they are towards your photography. You also know that these kinds of workshops don’t come cheap. That’s why I think that Kelby Training is a great value.

For only 24 bucks a month ($16.50/mo if you buy a yearly subscription), you can watch as many workshops as you want and take advantage of an enormous collection of courses by pros such as Joe McNally, Dave Black, Tom Bol, Syl Arena, Jay Maisel, Moose Peterson and many more. In addition, you can learn from Photoshop, Lightroom and web courses of all skill levels, and entirely at your own pace. You can even watch on your iOS or tablet. I've watched a variety of tutorials on the site and am impressed at the sheer amount of information that's available.

If this kind of training method works for you, then take advantage of Kelby Training’s current offer of $10 off on annual subscriptions. Click here and use discount code: KTCJQ12. That brings it down to $15.75 per month. Pretty much the same as 3 lattes plus tips. That’s cheap considering how much inspiration and expert training you can apply to your photography.

Lastly, my new eBook is chugging right along through the design phase. Working title is Behind The Action and as I’ve said, it features a breakdown of twelve outdoor, adventure and people images. I’m really excited to get this out into your hands! I promise that I’ll keep you posted on any news regarding release dates and pricing.

I hope that 2013 is starting off great for you. Enjoy the recent posts and have a great week!

Best,

Dan

7 Things That Made Me A Better Photographer in 2012

Cycling Polychrome Pass during a midnight sunsetThis time last year, I wrote about my Top 10 Photography Highlights of 2011, where I listed some of my notable accomplishments of the preceding year. This time, rather than look back at what I did, I want to focus on a few things that helped me learn, motivated me in some way, or that allowed me to push my creativity and advance my skills in new directions. I present them as examples of the kinds of things that might help motivate … Continue reading

Don’t Get Discouraged, Everyone Takes Bad Photos

_DSC8997Shoot any bad photos recently? Yes? Don’t feel alone, everyone takes bad photos. Even the pros. No matter how good a photographer you are, and no matter what you’re shooting, the truth is that you’ll end up with more bad photos then good ones. Even if you were shooting a rugged looking ski model carving perfect turns in epic powder through the aspens at sunset, and even if you had nothing but a bag full of pro gear, I can … Continue reading

Recent Publication: AOPA Pilot Magazine, January 2013

Cessna 170 glacier flying, Chugach Mountains, AlaskaAnother recent publication, this image appears as a two-page spread in this month’s AOPA Pilot Magazine in a brand new department called “Visual Approach.” Being relatively new to the aviation world, this is my first time being published in a national aviation magazine. I’m honored to have my work featured in AOPA, because it’s one of, if not the most widely read publication by pilots in the world. Ok, I’ll be honest. I’m just excited because I know with near certainty … Continue reading
