Hi ,

A little over a year ago, I visited my dad in Ohio, and spent a couple of days filming him in his workshop. He took up the craft of wood turning a few years ago, and he's gotten pretty proficient. While I was there, I watched him make a bowl from a log that was lying in his backyard.

I finally got the video edited, and yesterday I posted it so he could see it on Father's Day. You can watch "Dad - Wood Turning Wonder" on my YouTube channel. 

This was a very special video for me to make. It was my first time making a short film that wasn't based on a bike race or an adventure in my little Cessna, and so I try to use a cinematic approach with both the filming and the editing. 

In addition, it was a very meaningful way to spend quality time with my dad, and to document this part of his life with a lasting memory of our week together. I'd seen some of the bowls that he's made, but to watch him crafrt one in real life was an amazing and inspiring experience.

I shot the whole thing with my FUJIFILM X-T4, which was mounted inside a Smallrig cage w/ a Remote Control handle and an Atomos Ninja recording monitor mounted on the top of the cage.

For nearly all of the scenes, I used the small and inexpensive XC16-50 zoom lens. These little XC lenses are not quite as durable as the XF lenses, but they have excellent quality glass and are very sharp. That's what I use to film all of my "talking head" YouTube videos these days. 

I'm every proud of how the finished movie came out. My dad loved it, and so I hope you'll enjoy watching it as well. Maybe it will inspire you to shoot a short film on your own with your own camera! Modern cameras are incredibly capable, creative machines.
